Nokia 6101 (Reviews)

See Larger Image After revealing the Nokia clamshell handsets like Nokia 6170 and 7270 and many others, the manufacturers have now unveiled the brand new Nokia 6101. The edges of the handset are however round and have plastic cover plates. There is no extraordinary look that the phone has, though like every Nokia production, the Nokia 6101 also stands apart. It is invented with two color displays, MP3 ringing tones and a radio. It is small enough to easily slip into the user's pocket. Unfortunately, there is an antenna attached to the phone on the top, obviously, which is now out of fashion. People prefer handsets without antennas nowadays. Just besides the antenna, there is a plate grid of the loud speaker. The Nokia 6101 consists of a push-to-talk button which enables the user to converse with another individual or a group just by pressing the button. On releasing the button, he can hear what others are talking.

The handset looks elegant and decent, has an extremely comfy keypad, built-in radio and two color displays as mentioned before. The outer color display shows 4K colors in a resolution of 96 x 65 pixels (i.e 4,096 colors) whereas the inner color display shows 65K in a resolution of 128 x 160 pixels (i.e 65,536 colors), with the support of TFT technology. A bad news following is that the phone is not provided with the Bluetooth technology. The front cover of the Nokia 6101 is mostly black. This can easily make it visible if there happens to be a scratch. Now moving on to the keypad, the buttons are so well situated that the user need not strain his finger to press the butons. He can comfortably place his finger on each of the button. To top it, the keypad does not emit irritating noise also whilst pressing the buttons.

The Nokia 6101 operates with Triband GSM coverage on upto five continents(GSM 850/1800/1900 and 900/1800/1900) with automatic switching between the bands. The handset weighs 97g, measuring 85 x 45 x 24mm. This Nokia handset is also bundled with an Integrated VGA camera with a resolution of 640 x 480 pixels. Out of the two displays the larger one can be used for clicking normal pictures and the smaller one can be used to take self potraits. Also enables the user to choose between image quality options- high, normal and basic, Integrated video recording and video player available with 3GPP spec(H.263 video & AMR audio packed along) and 3GPP spec(H.263 video, MPEG-4 and AMR audio respectively both packed in 3gp format. The camera provides pretty clear images too.

See Larger Image The user enjoys the normal features like alarm clock, calendar, to-do list, notes, stopwatch and so on. The phonebook can store upto 500 names. With regard to messaging, there is SMS facility, interface for audio messaging, email supports POP3, SMTP and IMAP4 protocol. The phone memory takes upto 150 messages. Over all, there is an internal memory of 3.7MB. There is a provision of an FM stereo radio and MP3 tracks for ringing tones as well as MIDI or polyphonic ringing tones.

The Nokia 6101 shares application with Java MIDP 2.0 with an inclusion of Over- the- air download of Java based applications. It connects with Infrared, USB with Pop-Port, Local synchronization using PC suite and Remote Over-the-air synchronization with SyncML.

In order to browse the Internet, the Nokia 6101 contains an Integrated xHTML browser connecting over TCP/IP and full OMA digital rights management for content protection. For transfer of data, there is an availability of EDGE, GPRS, HSCSD and TCP/IP.

Apart from these innumerable features, the user enjoys call management catagories like speed dialing, automatic answering, call waiting, conference, etc. For entertainment, games can be downloaded from the internet. Otherwise Java games already available are golf, card game and some constucting tubular systems.

So, here is the Nokia 6101 whish is simple yet has eye-catching features. The Bluetooth facility is not available. SAD!!!! But other features are pretty satisfactory. The old-fashioned antenna has to be overlooked. We say......GO FOR IT!!
